To most people, “lighting design” is a matter of choosing a lampshade or deciding which type of light bulb to use. In fact, it is an important aspect of the architecture of any building, house or room.

Lighting design is not just about providing sufficient light to carry out the activities which usually occur in any given area; rather it is about creating an ambiance or mood, which affects how we experience the time spent there.

Although we may not be consciously aware of it, the lighting in our favourite restaurant or cafe makes us feel welcome and relaxed and adds to our enjoyment of the food and drink we consume. In a film, or at the theatre, the lighting is as important as the music in the producing the atmosphere required by the director. Sinister scenes require an ominous appearance, full of shadows and gloom, while happy endings are bathed in soft, bright hues.

Similarly, in your house, creative lighting can make a small room feel spacious, a large area cosy, or create a living space where you feel energised or relaxed according to type of room in question. The angles of the beams of light as they hit the furnishings and decorations can completely change the look of your lounge room after dark, as can the quality and diffusion of the light. And of course there is still the matter of the light fixtures used which are decorative in their own right and should complement interior design.
