The technology of lighting design has been much influenced by the advent of film and television, with lighting demands for film sets being quite a different matter from live events.
When lighting for film, the designer must view everything through the eye of the camera, which sees things very differently from the human eye, including angle, colour and intensity of light. In particular, despite the latest in camera technology, video can still not distinguish between shade and light in the same way as a human eye, which has the ability to constantly adjust. This results in very dark and very light patches in a scene with variable illumination. Film lighting is then designed to counter this problem and the skilful lighting of a scene will create light and shadows in just the right places to create the desired atmosphere.
The camera also sees colour in a different way from the naked eye. Lighting intensity and angle must therefore be constantly adjusted to allow the camera to produce an image which looks natural.
There are many tools available and indeed necessary to help lighting technicians in their trade. All aspects of light must be analysed, including intensity and colour temperature, and adjustments continuously made.
